The problem
- • Moss and weeds growing in every joint, lifting the kiln-dried sand out.
- • Black biological staining across the south-facing half of the drive.
- • Two 30cm engine oil stains roughly 18 months old.
- • Original red colour barely visible — the whole surface read as dark grey from the street.
Our approach
- 1. Pre-treated the moss and oil stains with an alkaline degreaser, left to dwell 20 minutes.
- 2. Cleaned the full surface with a 21" commercial rotary surface cleaner at 200 bar — no zebra-striping, even finish.
- 3. Spot-treated the oil stains with a second degreaser pass and hot water.
- 4. Brushed 80kg of kiln-dried jointing sand back into the joints.
- 5. Finished with a sodium hypochlorite biocide to slow moss regrowth for 12+ months.
The outcome
- Original red and charcoal Tobermore colour fully visible again.
- Oil stains lifted from 100% visible to a faint shadow — owner happy not to need block replacement.
- Owner returned for an annual maintenance biocide the following spring.
