The problem
- • Heavy moss bedded down on the north pitch, with tufts up to 30mm deep along the lap joints.
- • Black streaking across the south pitch from Gloeocapsa magma.
- • Moss debris filling the gutters with every storm.
- • Sand coating still intact on the tiles underneath the moss — roof had life in it yet.
Our approach
- 1. Hand-scraped the heaviest moss off the north pitch from the ridge down so debris went into a tarp, not the gutters.
- 2. Soft-washed the full roof at under 100 psi with a biocide blend, allowing 15 minutes dwell.
- 3. Low-pressure rinse from ridge to gutter to lift the dead growth.
- 4. Cleared the gutters afterwards with a ground-based vacuum — included in the price.
- 5. Final biocide top-up across both pitches to prevent regrowth for 4–6 years.
The outcome
- Original tile colour restored across both pitches.
- Owner saved £3,680 vs the unnecessary re-roof quote.
- No moss debris in gutters at the autumn check 6 months later — biocide working as expected.
